Dear Parents and Visitors,
Top O' the Day to you all and happy early spring. It is so nice to see blue skies and the snow disappearing after so many months of frigid weather.
This month, the students prepared for the school wide Spelling Bee competition for the 3rd-5th grades and the 6th-8th grade spelling finalists. There were 9 finalists in each grade level. Congratulations to Emma King from the (3rd-5th) and Tristan Wolstrom ( 6th-8th)grade levels. Every student finalist was well prepared, confident, and poised during the competitions and I am very proud of their performances. Congratulations to all for making this competition exciting for everyone.
As we enter the 4th week of Lent, the children have been committed to their Lenten promises of fasting, almsgiving, penance, and increasing prayer. This year, the students of St. Teresa of Avila are participating in the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has declared 2012-2013 as Year of Faith. This is a time all Catholics are called to deepen their faith in Christ. During this time of spiritual renewal, we have encouraged our students to emulate Christ and to live out our Catholic Social teaching by caring for those in need. Please follow the link to read the article in its entirety. Year of Faith NNC March 2013
In addition to this sacrifice, the students are preparing for Easter by participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation here at school. We are very blessed to have Father Chuck and Father Doroteo at the school helping our students reflect upon their actions and to resolve to do better in the future.
This week, we are proud to induct 6 new members into the National Junior Honor Society. We'd like to congratulate Ellen Bayliss, Adan Garcia, Dylan Roide, Lindsey Thew, Ava Loos, and Danielle Smith. The National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 13th following Morning Prayers and Announcements. We would like to invite our parents and friends to attend this very special ceremony to acknowledge the accomplishments of these talented young people.
On March 26th, 27th, and 28th, St. Teresa of Avila School will be the site of the the National Geographic traveling map of Europe. This map measures 29' X 29" and is an enormously entertaining and educationally powerful tool for introducing geography and map reading to students in grades K-8. The National Geographic's Giant Traveling Maps, produced by National Geographic Live, tour the country's schools, bringing hands-and feet-on geography education to hundreds of thousands of students each year. The maps promote geographic literacy by igniting interest in geography, promoting activities that incorporate physical movement and games to teach students place names, physical geography, and cultural geography as well as map reading skills. We are very excited to have been chosen one of three schools in the state of Nevada to host this traveling map.
